The cabarets of Montmartre have a long history of defiance. Since the Chat Noir opened in 1881, they have been havens for🧑🏼🎨 artists, writers, and those seeking to escape society's constraints. But since the war, they've transformed into something more wild, more liberating. The flapper—that emblem of feminine rebellion—found her spiritual home in these dimly lit rooms where jazz🎷 pulses through the night and inhibitions dissolve like sugar in champagne.🍾 I know these places well though I visit them less frequently than my more bohemian friends. At Bricktop's dancers experiment wildly, drinking and smoking while flirting with abandon. 💃🏻The dance floors teem with women in beaded dresses that catch the light as they perform the Black Bottom or shimmy until their fringes create hypnotic patterns in the smoky air.

Was Henri part of this world before me? Did he fall under the spell of women who dance for a living who understand the power of seduction as a performance?💋 Women so different from me who despite my fashion-forward appearance still believes in love before passion?🌹
This morning as Henri slept I found myself drawn to his bureau drawer—the one he keeps locked but had carelessly left open. Inside was a photograph: Henri in evening dress with his arm around a woman in a beaded costume💃🏻 her dark eyes lined dramatically and feathers adorning her cropped hair. On the back, in flowing script: "To my dearest H—all my heart, always. ❤️Your Lilou. 1924." Just one year ago. Before me, but recent enough that the ink has barely dried, the memory barely faded.💔
